CPAP Muffler
When my mother first got her Dreamstation 2 CPAP, one of the first things that she noticed was a wheezing sound that came up the hose as she breathed. My mother’s sleep was disturbed by this, she described it as follows: “It made breathing sound exactly like it does when I’ve had pneumonia in the past. This caused anxiety and made it difficult to sleep. The manufacturer does not have any remedy for this.”
My father kludged together a sound muffler based on the text description given by someone on a CPAP forum. “It served its purpose for a time, but is heavy and the corners tended to get caught on my pillow. Additionally, because the connectors were glued on, they occasionally fell off or developed small whistles.”
Based on his concept and my knowledge of acoustics, I rendered and printed a single-piece muffler that built upon the prototype. “The new version, created and printed by Willow, is a single piece, much lighter and doesn’t get caught on corners. It has entirely eliminated the wheezing sound. The connectors fit my hoses perfectly. It is superior in every way.”
Above you can see a brief video seeing the rendering and the printed model. Below you can photographs of the prototype and the final model. You can get the 3D model for free to print yourself here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:5195013
