Design Philosophy
I believe that creativity comes from knowledge, and that one can be inspired and passionate about anything: from Tulipmania, to electrical engineering, to bolts and fasteners. I find that my most creative solutions stem from the strangest combinations of interests. I’m inspired by a communal passion for the pursuit of knowledge.
No two projects have the same design process, but I strive for immersion into the piece’s world through sound. I want audio design to work in tandem with other artistry to facilitate a greater whole; if audiences are noticing my sound design standing alone, it’s pulling them out of the cohesive piece. Enhancing a lead melody with signal processing or building the quiet cacophony of the day-to-day world around the action is more powerful than any sound effect on its own. Context is everything in sound, and versatility in approach and application is how we create something new with every work.
My primary goals as an artist are productive collaboration, critical problem solving, and effective communication (including setting professional boundaries). Art is about integrating multiple complex perspectives, and through their synthesis, we create success. A thorough understanding of audio’s technical elements facilitates my ability to achieve a desired sound decisively to maintain a productive and collaborative workflow.
